10 Practical strategies to secure a major gifts role.

Breaking Into Major Gifts: 10 Practical Moves for Aspiring Fundraisers

With six-figure gifts acting as lifelines for many nonprofits, major gift officers are in high demand—and short supply. If you’re aiming to make the leap, here are ten things to focus on.

  1. Know What You’re Signing Up For
It’s not gala glamor—it’s strategy, stamina, and empathy. Think 10% chicken dinners, 90% disciplined work: organization, collaboration, goal-setting, creativity, and healthy fearlessness.

  2. Go Where Donors Are
Show up. Volunteer or attend donor-facing events and watch how relationships are cultivated. Visibility builds reps—and signals initiative to leaders.

  3. Practice the Ask
Fundraising is learned by doing. Start with warm annual donors and stretch the gift slightly. At larger shops, partner with research for a couple of unassigned leads. Low-risk reps = real stories for interviews.

  4. Shadow, Learn, Repeat
Offer to schedule visits, sit in on meetings, and draft follow-ups for a seasoned MGO. You’ll absorb how pros structure conversations and move prospects through the pipeline.

  5. Invest in Real Knowledge
Study the full philanthropy cycle and the language of major gifts (moves management, capacity, inclination, stewardship). Courses/webinars/books help you build the vocabulary and theory to put into practice.

  6. Find Mentors and Allies
If you do only one thing, do this. Through AFP or informal networks, build relationships with leaders who’ll share playbooks and advocate for you. Internal allies often create your first break.

  7. Start From Within
Hiring managers value results and institutional savvy. Demonstrate initiative where you are; internal promotion is often the quickest on-ramp to major gifts.

  8. Be Willing to Take a Risk
Breaking in mid-career can be tough. Consider short-term or junior roles that accelerate your learning curve. Demonstrated success compounds quickly.

  9. Right-Size Your Experience
“Major gifts are just annual gifts with more zeros” is only partly true. Context matters. If an organization’s average major gift is $100K+, $5K experience won’t translate. But at an org where $20K is “major,” that same $5K track record is compelling. Aim where your experience fits—and scale up.

  10. Focus on Donor–Mission Fit
Passion for the cause is great, but employers want evidence you can match donor motivations to program impact and build durable relationships that advance the mission.
