Remote roles are disappearing — here’s how to stay competitive
What Candidates Can Do Right Now
🚫 Don’t:
-
Apply for roles you wouldn’t take just because they’re remote.
-
Assume “hybrid” means the same thing everywhere.
-
Take an onsite requirement personally — it’s often about collaboration, not control.
✅ Do:
-
Communicate your preferences early in the process.
-
Stay open if the right opportunity aligns with your goals.
-
Think long-term — mentorship, visibility, and growth matter as much as flexibility.
The Harsh Reality: Remote Roles are Rare Again
Industry-wide, only about 3% of nonprofit roles are fully remote.
And “hybrid” is quietly shifting from three days in the office to four — sometimes even five. “Work from home” is becoming “work from home once in a while.”
Meanwhile, candidate frustration is at an all-time high.
If you’re focused solely on remote roles, be prepared for fierce competition — sometimes 200+ applicants per posting. That high demand drives down salaries and limits opportunities for advancement.
It’s not always fair, and yes, it raises equity concerns. But right now, it’s the market reality.
The Hidden Downside of the Remote Years
We now have two to three cohorts of early-career professionals who began their nonprofit careers remotely. They should be ready for management roles by now — but many aren’t.
Not because they lack skill or drive, but because they missed out on something vital: exposure.
You don’t overhear how a manager handles a tough donor call on Zoom.
You don’t get pulled into an impromptu brainstorm or debrief after a site visit.
You don’t absorb the nuance of team culture through a screen.
Those moments — spontaneous, informal, and human — are what shape strong leaders.
The Benefit of Being Back In-person
The pendulum has swung back toward the office — especially in mission-driven organizations where collaboration and learning are central to the work.
Remote work isn’t completely dead, but it’s no longer the default. And perhaps, this shift will help restore something we lost along the way: the human side of professional growth.
The human side of professional growth is built on connection — the casual hallway conversations, shared laughter before a meeting starts, and mentorship moments that can’t be scheduled on Zoom. It’s where ideas evolve through dialogue, where emerging leaders learn by observing, and where trust is built not just through results, but through relationships.
Farewell, Remote Roles — We'll Miss You
Many of us hoped remote work would be one of the pandemic’s lasting silver linings — but it wasn’t meant to be.
Recently, halfway through an interview, a candidate for an onsite nonprofit leadership role, said:
“I don’t take roles that require being in the office more than twice a week.”
And that was that — the interview was over.
Despite the job posting stating that the role was in-person, with flexibility to work from home one day a week, that interview perfectly captured the tension between employers and job seekers that we’re seeing across today’s nonprofit talent market.
